Shopify fees explained: subscription, payments, and apps

Shopify is not priced like a marketplace. The monthly plan pays for commerce software, while payment processing and optional services add variable costs. Comparing only one percentage misses the reason merchants choose—or outgrow—a plan.

01

Separate the plan from payment processing

The plan subscription is a fixed monthly cost. Card processing is charged on eligible payments and varies by plan, country, payment method, and account. Model both before comparing Shopify with a marketplace.

02

Check the payment-provider path

Using Shopify Payments as the sole provider can avoid Shopify third-party transaction fees on covered orders. Using another provider can add Shopify transaction charges on top of the provider’s own processing fee, subject to current regional rules.

03

Audit the app stack

Themes, apps, domains, shipping tools, email, returns, and advertising can exceed the core plan price. Keep a monthly list of every recurring Shopify-related charge and divide it by revenue to calculate an effective platform rate.

FAQ

Common questions

Does Shopify take a percentage of every sale?

Payment processing normally applies to card transactions. Separate third-party transaction fees depend on the payment setup, plan, region, and current Shopify terms.

Is the annual plan always cheaper?

Annual billing can reduce the effective subscription price, but only if the store remains active long enough to use the commitment.
