Etsy fees explained: what sellers should include
The headline Etsy transaction fee is only one part of a seller’s total cost. A useful estimate needs to reflect listing behavior, payment processing, advertising exposure, location, and the amount the buyer pays.
Start with the required fee layers
A simplified US order commonly includes a listing fee, Etsy’s transaction percentage, and Etsy Payments processing. The transaction calculation can apply to more than the item price, so use the full order values required by Etsy’s current rules.
Treat advertising as a separate scenario
Offsite Ads and Etsy Ads do not behave like a universal transaction rate. Model them separately so an advertised order does not distort the expected margin on every sale.
Calculate profit, not only payout
After estimating marketplace fees, subtract materials, packaging, shipping you absorb, returns, labor, and taxes. The amount Etsy sends is a payout figure, not necessarily business profit.
Common questions
Does Etsy charge a fee when an item does not sell?
Listing fees can apply regardless of whether a listing sells. Renewals and multi-quantity behavior can create additional listing charges.
Are Etsy fees the same in every country?
No. Payment processing, regulatory operating fees, taxes, and available services can vary by seller location.
